Julia Fox has dedicated the last 18 months to Hackney Foodbank as a supervisor in their food distribution centre.
Now, as she prepares to leave the charity to focus on new projects, she’s running the Hackney Half marathon to raise funds for them and she’s appealing to locals for sponsorship.
She said: “Growing up, I’ve been on the receiving end of food poverty, so I know first-hand how important a food bank can be for families who are struggling. That’s why working with Hackney Foodbank has been such a big deal for me. It’s not just a job – it’s been an opportunity to work with a team of like-minded people, give back to the community, and listen to stories that remind me every day why this support is absolutely essential for people in need.
“On top of that, I’m also in my final year of training to become a psychotherapist. So, my time at the foodbank has been a real eye-opener – it’s given me firsthand experience of the struggles people face, and it’s taught me a lot about the power of support, community, and resilience.
“The food bank has become like a second home, and the people I’ve learned from and been inspired by every day will always have a special place in my heart.”
Asked how she feels about the challenge of running 13 miles, she said: “The hardest part is behind me - once you sign up, it’s all about the training and perseverance! Everyone has been so incredibly supportive, sharing amazing tips on diet, running, and mindset. The main goal? To have fun, first and foremost! And, of course, to raise as much as possible for my favourite charity!”
Julia is one of 40 runners taking part in this year’s Hackney Half on Sunday May 18th for the food bank.
The charity is currently supporting an average of 750 people per week – demand is up 20% on last year.
