Volunteers are the life blood of foodbanks. Your skills could be just what we need.
Volunteers are the driving force behind foodbanks. There are thousands of volunteers across the UK, helping The Trussell Trust Foodbank Network get emergency food to people in crisis. We want you to enjoy volunteering and there are lots of ways to get involved. Whatever role you choose, you will make a real difference to the life of someone in crisis.
Locally in Hackney, we have over 40 volunteers helping every week to make foodbank happen…and we still need more! The opportunities to help are listed here:
Volunteer Drivers Needed Now!
Every day we need to get food from our warehouse to our four foodbank centres. We need lots of help to do this. In particular we need people with their own vehicles who can come and collect the food orders and drive the orders to the foodbank centres. We are currently recruiting drivers for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and one Saturday per month. If you have a clean driving record, are physically able to lift crates weighing up to 16kg and able to help for a couple hours a week, please let us know! Fill in our volunteer application form here!
Our local website needs constant attention. Could your digital skills help communicate our message to a local and global audience? You will need to know a little about websites and ideally have experience of using WordPress (though training and support is available).
If you are interested in volunteering please get in touch, we’d love to hear from you!
We need help to weigh, sort and store donated food before it’s made into parcels for clients to collect. You could help in this vital work to ensure we have the right food available at all times. Warehouse volunteer shifts are:
- Monday: 10:00-14:00 or 18:30-20:30
- Tuesday: 10:00-15:00
- Thursday: 10:00-15:00
- Saturday: 11:00-15:00 on the first Saturday of the month
Helping at a foodbank centre
Meet clients and give out food parcels. Have an informal chat with clients over a cup of tea, to discuss their situation and signpost to further support. Foodbank Centre volunteers shifts are:
- Monday: 10.30-1.30
- Tuesday: 10:00-13:30
- Wednesday: 16:30-19:00
- Thursday: 11.30-3.00
There is a lot of important record-keeping needed to keep foodbank on the move. We are specifically looking for a volunteer who can commit a few hours on a weekday to assist with the maintenance of our contact databases. It’s a great way to use or develop your office skills! Shift will be 2-4 hours and can be anytime Tuesday-Thursday between 9:30-16:30.
Please note that Hackney Foodbank is undergoing a major warehouse and office location in addition to staffing changes in October 2016. Between 10 October and 7 November, we may take longer to reply to enquiries than normal. Your offer of support is valuable to us and we certainly need help, so we appreciate your patience at this time.
